Denmark Sends Troops to Greenland Amid Rising Tensions

Denmark is said to be dispatching military reinforcements to Greenland as tensions rise over Trump’s ambitions to acquire the Arctic island.

Initial units are being sent to Greenland, a semi-autonomous region of Denmark, to pave the way for larger forces from the Danish military and other defense branches, according to the Danish Broadcasting Corporation. A forward unit from the Danish Armed Forces is already on-site, handling logistics in preparation for potential subsequent deployments.

Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen announced plans for a sustained and increased presence in Greenland by the Danish Armed Forces and international partners, citing the recent involvement of NATO countries in exercises in Greenland and hinting at future collaborations.

Poulsen emphasized that the bolstered military presence is a direct response to the challenges posed in the Arctic region.

Following the Danish broadcaster’s report, Donald Trump reiterated his belief in the strategic importance of Greenland for U.S. national security. He emphasized the necessity for acquiring Greenland to support the envisioned “Golden Dome” missile defense system, criticizing NATO for not leading efforts to secure the territory.

Trump argued that without U.S. ownership, NATO’s effectiveness would be compromised, reiterating concerns about Russia and China gaining leverage without American involvement.

Despite Trump’s push for ownership of Greenland, only 17% of Americans support his proposal, as per a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll. The majority, including a significant portion of both Democrats and Republicans, view the idea unfavorably.

US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are scheduled to meet with Danish and Greenlandic officials at the White House today. This meeting follows Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen’s statement reaffirming Greenland’s allegiance to Denmark and rejecting any notion of being acquired by the U.S.

Greenland’s desire to remain under Danish sovereignty was reiterated by Nielsen, stating that Greenland opts for its current status within the Kingdom of Denmark.

EU chief Ursula von der Leyen expressed support for Greenland’s autonomy, stressing that decisions regarding Greenland’s sovereignty should be made by Denmark and Greenland alone.
