Dawn, known for fathering multiple marmot litters and indulging in rock salt, significantly increased his body weight this summer to nearly 13 pounds, doubling from his initial weight of 5.5 pounds.
Adler expressed her admiration for Dawn, emphasizing his peculiar habit of consuming rocks. However, with the title of the champion, Dawn now also represents the Marmot Project, a vital research initiative facing funding challenges due to budget cuts affecting scientific programs in the U.S.
The Fat Marmot Week was inspired by the popular Fat Bear Week in Alaska, highlighting the preparation of marmots for hibernation by accumulating body fat. Adler, a UCLA graduate student involved in the Marmot Project, underscored the importance of long-term studies like theirs in understanding wildlife adaptation to environmental changes.
Unfortunately, the Marmot Project is at risk due to significant funding reductions affecting research organizations such as the National Science Foundation. In response, the project launched creative fundraising initiatives like OnlyMarms on OnlyFans to secure necessary financial support. Despite raising over $120,000 in donations, the project seeks sustainable funding solutions to ensure its continuity.
In a bid to reverse the funding cuts, the Marmot Project initiated a petition urging U.S. Congress to reinstate research funding. While these efforts continue, plans are underway for the next Fat Marmot Week in 2027, aiming to raise awareness and support for the yellow-bellied marmot research. Adler hopes that through such campaigns, marmots will garner greater appreciation for their resilience and survival instincts in challenging environments.
