The Canadian Elite Basketball League has reverted to a single-game championship format. The decision came swiftly after the best-of-three final between the Winnipeg Sea Bears and Brampton Honey Badgers was canceled due to unsafe playing conditions caused by court condensation. The league prioritized the safety of players, officials, and fans in making this call.
Originally, Brampton took an early 6-0 lead, but the game was halted when Xavier Moon of the Sea Bears slipped on the court. As a result, the final match will now be a one-game showdown scheduled for this Saturday in Winnipeg at 3:30 p.m. ET. This change was necessary as the best-of-three series could not be completed within the scheduled timeframe.
Honey Badgers CEO Al Whitley expressed regret over the cancellation of the game. Brampton had previously won the two encounters with Winnipeg during the season, setting the stage for an intense championship battle.
The Sea Bears and Honey Badgers have had impressive playoff runs, with Winnipeg defying odds to reach the finals. The No. 2-seeded Sea Bears surprised the top-ranked Vancouver Bandits in the West final, while Brampton secured wins over Ottawa BlackJacks and Niagara River Lions in the East semifinal and conference final, respectively.
The championship game will not only be a thrilling on-court battle but also a family affair off the court, as the Sea Bears and Honey Badgers are owned by siblings, David Asper and Leonard Asper, respectively.
The upcoming single-game championship will be a return to the format used in previous years, promising an exciting conclusion to the CEBL season.
