A 24-year-old man has confessed to the vicious killing of his pregnant sister and her unborn child, with his diary entries suggesting a disturbing motive behind the heinous act.
Jack Ball has accepted responsibility for the murder of 30-year-old Bethany Ann Israel and her unborn baby, followed by dismembering Bethany’s body and scattering the remains.
The shocking incident was uncovered when the siblings’ mother contacted the authorities on the night of May 23, 2024, suspecting that her daughter had been murdered at her brother’s residence. Bethany, who was around 17 to 18 weeks pregnant at the time, was determined to have been murdered along with her unborn child by a medical examiner.
Bethany had gone to have dinner with her brother, but as hours passed without any communication, family members became worried. Their mother went to her son’s house to check on them, where she witnessed Ball hastily leaving the premises. Upon entering the house, she discovered a significant amount of blood, prompting her to call 911.
Upon arriving at the Minnesota scene, officers found blood traces in the kitchen and various weapons covered in blood, including a saw, hatchet, and knives. Further investigation led to the discovery of dismembered body parts in the house, and an alert from a local resident about a man placing what seemed to be a body part on their doorstep. Ball was eventually located with a self-inflicted neck injury in a nearby backyard and taken to a hospital.
Investigators recovered several journals in Ball’s handwriting that shed light on his motive for the gruesome crime. Entries indicated his anger towards his sister for her pregnancy, viewing her as no longer innocent.
Dakota County Attorney Kathy Keena expressed deep distress over the case, emphasizing the need for justice for the victims and support for their family.
In a GoFundMe tribute, Bethany was remembered as a beloved wife, daughter, sister, and expectant mother, with her kind spirit and love leaving an indelible mark on those around her.
In January 2025, Ball, who cited mental illness as his defense, was formally charged with premeditated first-degree murder and intentional second-degree murder. He eventually pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder, with prosecutors recommending a life sentence as part of the plea agreement.
Under Minnesota law, defendants can claim a lack of criminal responsibility due to mental illness. Ball awaits a court hearing on his mental health defense scheduled for May 21, with a potential life sentence if convicted.
