Border Patrol Officers on Leave After Fatal Shooting

Two US Border Patrol officers involved in the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti have been placed on administrative leave, according to DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin. The agents, who remain unnamed, have been reassigned to desk roles with paid leave as investigations into the incident continue. They have also been provided with mental health support as part of standard procedure.

The victim, Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old US citizen and intensive care unit nurse, was shot during an immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis on January 24 by federal agents. The shooting, captured on video, has sparked nationwide protests and raised concerns about federal tactics.

Following the incident, President Donald Trump has called for a thorough investigation into the shooting after initial statements suggesting Pretti posed a threat were contradicted by a government review. The public outcry has increased following Pretti’s death and the killing of another protester, Renee Good, by an ICE agent in the same city.

The ongoing investigation and protests have made Pretti’s death a focal point in the national conversation about federal immigration enforcement and the use of force by federal agents. US Attorney General Pam Bondi reported that 16 protesters have been arrested in Minnesota for allegedly assaulting federal law enforcement officers.

Bondi stated, “I am in Minneapolis today. Federal agents have arrested 16 Minnesota rioters for allegedly assaulting federal law enforcement – individuals who have been resisting our federal law enforcement. We anticipate more arrests as we are committed to upholding the law.”
