“AI-Powered Program to Revolutionize Govt. Services”

A new technological pilot program may eliminate the need to spend hours on the phone seeking government assistance for tax matters or driving tests. CustomerFirst, a specialized team, aims to streamline processes by reducing long wait times on calls, repetitive form submissions, and excessive paperwork.

Utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) and contemporary solutions, CustomerFirst seeks to create services that emulate customer experiences in the private sector, such as in modern banking and online shopping. Tech minister Ian Murray highlighted the inefficiencies in current government services, emphasizing the time wasted by citizens dealing with outdated methods like phone calls and paperwork.

CustomerFirst, part of the government’s digital roadmap, will tailor efficiency plans for various public services. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) is the first agency partnering with CustomerFirst to enhance customer interactions related to driving licenses, vehicle registration, and other motoring services.

Inspired by Octopus Energy’s success in utilizing AI for customer emails, ministers aim to improve government services’ interaction with the public. This initiative could potentially save taxpayers up to £4 billion by transitioning to smarter technology and online processes over traditional methods like phone calls or in-person visits.

CustomerFirst builds upon ongoing efforts to modernize public services across different government sectors, including initiatives at HMRC and the NHS app. Roads and Buses Minister Simon Lightwood emphasized the importance of simplifying interactions with service providers to enhance customer experiences and efficiency.
