Manitoba has seen a surge in organ donor registrations, hitting a record high since the launch of its online registry over a decade ago. Despite this milestone, only six percent of Manitobans have enrolled, prompting calls for increased efforts to boost registration and potentially save more lives, according to organ recipients and transplant advocates.
Dr. Owen Mooney, medical director at Transplant Manitoba, emphasized the urgency in expanding the donor pool, stating that every registered and consenting donor can significantly impact the lives of those in need of organ transplants. Highlighting the critical need for organs, he stressed the importance of raising awareness and encouraging more Manitobans to join the registry.
Paul Meilleur, who battled pulmonary fibrosis, shared his transformative experience post a double-lung transplant, underscoring the life-changing impact of organ donations. His brother, Adrian Meilleur, also benefited from a lung transplant, emphasizing the vital role of organ donors in saving lives.
Transplant Manitoba reported approximately 75,000 registered donors by August’s end, nearly doubling since 2018. Despite this progress, Dr. Mooney acknowledged the substantial gap that still exists in organ donor registration in Manitoba.
Greg Unger, executive director at the Kidney Foundation of Canada’s Manitoba branch, emphasized the need for increased donor registrations to provide more individuals with the opportunity for life-saving transplants. Educating the public on organ donation processes and facilitating registration through various channels were identified as crucial steps in bridging the registration gap.
Efforts to streamline the donor registration process, such as integrating registration options into routine government interactions like driver’s license renewal or health card applications, were suggested as potential strategies to enhance registration rates. While Manitoba continues to collaborate with Transplant Manitoba to promote organ donation, stakeholders advocate for greater public engagement and awareness to drive increased donor registrations and ultimately save more lives.
Adrian Meilleur, reflecting on his successful lung transplant, emphasized the profound impact of receiving a second chance at life through organ donation. He called for enhanced infrastructure in rural areas to expedite organ retrievals and ensure timely access to life-saving transplants, underscoring the transformative potential of organ donation in providing individuals with renewed hope and vitality.
