The Canadian government has given Flair Airlines a $76 million emergency assistance package to help alleviate the financial strain caused by the surging cost of jet fuel. Flair’s CEO, Len Corrado, emphasized in an interview that this funding demonstrates the government’s acknowledgment of the industry’s challenges and its commitment to maintaining competitiveness.
The Canada Enterprise Emergency Funding Corp. disclosed that the bailout loans are intended to counteract the escalating fuel expenses and support lowering airfares. The terms stipulate that the loan must be repaid within four years, with interest rates below current market levels.
In a related development, Transat A.T. Inc., the parent company of Air Transat, has received $430 million in financial aid following the onset of the conflict in Iran in late February. The conflict triggered a sharp rise in energy prices, causing jet fuel costs to nearly double compared to a year ago.
Furthermore, Porter Airlines has recently been granted a $125 million bailout loan by the government to help mitigate the financial impacts of the escalating fuel prices.
