“Minnesota Governor Halts Boundary Waters Mining Permits”

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz announced on Tuesday that the state will not be processing permits for proposed mining projects in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, following the lifting of a federal ban by the U.S. Congress and the Trump administration four months ago. The wilderness area, located along the Minnesota-Canada border, is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts.

Governor Walz, a Democrat, emphasized the importance of preserving the pristine nature of the area, stating that it is the responsibility of Minnesotans to protect this sacred place. However, the executive order issued by Walz is temporary and will expire in April, allowing for potential changes by the next governor.

While there are no immediate mining projects in progress, Twin Metals Minnesota LLC has been exploring the possibility of mining for copper, nickel, and other metals in the national forest. The company claims that its methods would not leave any waste rock above ground, thereby minimizing environmental impact.

The concern lies in the potential pollution that could result from mining activities near the canoe area, prompting Governor Walz to take action. His order prohibits Minnesota regulators from participating in federal environmental reviews related to nonferrous mining in the Rainy River watershed, connected to the Boundary Waters.

The move has sparked criticism from Republican U.S. Representative Pete Stauber, who accused Walz of jeopardizing the economy and way of life in northern Minnesota. Despite the controversy, advocacy groups like Save the Boundary Waters have lauded the governor’s decision, citing the incompatibility of copper mining with the area’s ecological preservation.

Legal expert James Coleman noted that Governor Walz’s order introduces uncertainty for future mining projects, as regulatory approvals may face challenges from changing political landscapes at the state and federal levels. This development underscores the complex and lengthy process involved in bringing mining ventures to fruition.
