“Canadian Legions Embrace Change to Attract Younger Members”

In Vancouver’s Kitsilano neighborhood, the Billy Bishop Legion offers a unique blend of activities, including veterans enjoying drinks in the English-style pub and yoga classes upstairs among military memorabilia. One regular, 37-year-old Hannah, finds solace and community in the Legion, highlighting efforts by Legions nationwide to attract a younger demographic.

These efforts, which include innovative events and free membership for newcomers in honor of the Royal Canadian Legion’s centenary, aim to provide a sense of belonging beyond military service. Despite its traditional role in supporting veterans, Legions are evolving to embrace new ideas and energy, exemplified by a recent surge in membership that has surpassed 100,000 new members in 2026.

While some Legions have faced closures due to financial challenges, others like the Bala Legion in Muskoka Lakes, Ontario, have adapted to survive. President Dennis Mills credits the Legion’s transformation to offering affordable meals, events, and opening its doors to the wider community. Looking ahead, the Bala Legion plans to expand by offering 110 affordable rental units to generate sustainable revenue.

Mills stresses the importance of attracting new members to ensure the Legion’s continued vitality and service to the community. Embracing change and inclusivity, Legions across Canada are reimagining their roles to remain relevant and welcoming to a diverse membership base.
