“US Warns Canada Against Retaliation in Trade Dispute”

U.S. trade envoy declares that any form of retaliation from Canada will not be tolerated by the Trump administration in response to the latest tariff threat. “We are safeguarding domestic supply chains, not engaging in a trade war,” stated U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer during a press briefing in Des Moines, Iowa. The administration asserts that any country retaliating against the U.S. will face consequences.

Trade discussions between Canada and the U.S. have intensified following Trump’s warning of imposing a substantial 50% tariff on numerous Canadian goods effective from August 19. Greer emphasized the global scope of the measures, not targeting Canada specifically, and highlighted the ongoing constructive negotiations with Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc.

Industry insiders familiar with the negotiations have revealed that the Canadian side views the August 19 deadline as pivotal and expressed that talks would be jeopardized if the tariffs are enforced. Greer emphasized prioritizing President Trump’s trade policies while expressing willingness to collaborate with Canada if it aligns with American interests.

Trump’s tariff ultimatum, triggered by grievances related to provincial liquor bans, dairy quotas, and auto tariffs, has prompted the Canadian side to address these concerns. However, Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet remains skeptical of an imminent deal, cautioning against compromising on dairy negotiations.

Greer highlighted multiple trade issues with Canada, particularly alcohol bans and retaliatory tariffs, emphasizing the U.S.’s stance on protecting foreign goods made by foreign workers. In response, former Canadian ambassador to the U.S. Frank McKenna defended Canada’s actions, asserting the country’s right to retaliate against unfair and illegal measures imposed by the U.S.
