Valeria Vecchio and her canine companion, Clifford, were strolling through a downtown park in Edmonton when she noticed a sudden change in his behavior. Clifford, a one-year-old poodle and Cavalier King Charles spaniel mix, became lethargic, his gums and tongue paled, and he started vomiting. Concerned, Vecchio suspected he might have ingested something harmful during their walk at Railtown Park. As Clifford’s condition worsened, she rushed him to the vet in an Uber, fearing he might fall asleep on the way.
Upon reaching the animal hospital, the vet suggested that Clifford might be suffering from opioid toxicity. After administering naloxone, Clifford made a full recovery. Vecchio, understanding the prevalence of open drug consumption in downtown areas, wasn’t surprised by the vet’s diagnosis.
Dr. Jami Frederick, president of the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association, noted an increase in opioid ingestion cases among pets in Edmonton, especially during the summer months. She emphasized the importance of pet owners carrying naloxone kits when walking their pets in public spaces and seeking immediate veterinary care if opioid toxicity is suspected.
While the City of Edmonton could not confirm the incident report, it mentioned regular maintenance of public spaces to minimize risks. Vecchio expressed her intention to be more cautious during walks with Clifford, avoiding areas where drug consumption is likely. She also emphasized the significance of closely monitoring Clifford’s diet and environment, emphasizing her love and care for her beloved pet.
