WestJet, the second-largest airline in Canada, is making arrangements to gradually halt operations in preparation for a potential strike or lockout by its flight attendants. The airline’s agreement to wind down operations is not a signal of an imminent labor dispute but a precautionary measure in case negotiations between the CUPE WestJet Component and the company fail to reach a resolution.
Despite the possibility of a strike, both the union and the company aim for a fair deal without resorting to a work stoppage. Ongoing negotiations with federal mediators provide hope for a negotiated settlement to avert any disruptions to WestJet’s services.
According to aviation expert John Gradek, it is common practice for airlines like WestJet to implement contingency plans to ensure operational readiness in case of a labor dispute. Preparations include ensuring that aircraft and crew members are not stranded abroad in the event of a shutdown.
While no flight cancellations have been announced by WestJet in relation to the labor dispute, the airline is offering flexibility for passengers traveling between July 30 and August 4 by waiving cancellation or change fees. The CUPE WestJet Component, representing approximately 4,400 union members, may initiate a strike by August 2 if an agreement is not reached.
A key issue in the negotiations is the compensation structure for flight attendants, particularly regarding unpaid work hours. The union contends that flight attendants are not adequately compensated for all hours worked, leading to tensions in reaching a consensus. WestJet’s CEO has defended the current pay model, emphasizing that flight attendants are compensated for all hours worked, including additional duties during flight operations.
The unresolved matter of unpaid work hours remains a significant point of contention between the union and the airline, reminiscent of past labor disputes in the aviation industry. WestJet’s history of labor disputes, including a strike in 2024 by unionized airline mechanics, underscores the importance of reaching a mutually beneficial agreement to prevent disruptions to air travel services.
