The affluent youth of Iran, offspring of the nation’s most powerful individuals, proudly exhibit their extravagant lifestyles and vast riches on the platform of Instagram. They often showcase their opulent living alongside renowned football stars such as Sergio Ramos and Kylian Mbappe.
This ostentatious display has previously sparked criticism and has once again come under scrutiny following protests in Iran triggered by a surge in living expenses on December 28. The discontented populace redirected their frustrations towards Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, demanding an end to his governance.
Despite the citizens’ struggles, the Iranian government labeled the protests as “riots,” and there are concerns that a significant number of individuals may have faced brutal consequences.
In response to the unrest, the authoritarian regime enforced an internet blackout on January 8, causing anxiety among Iranians residing in Britain for the safety of their relatives in Iran.
While ordinary Iranians grapple with the repercussions of a sharp devaluation of their currency, the privileged sons and daughters of the country’s elite, known as the aghazadeh, continue to lead a life of luxury, whether within the country or abroad.

While living a lavish lifestyle in Spain, Sobhani frequently shares photos with his favorite Real Madrid players, including Mbappe and Vinicius Junior, projecting an image of affluence and luxury.
In the midst of the protests, a post linked to Sobhani cryptically hinted at the sentiments of the Iranian people towards the authorities. Despite facing backlash online, with some accusing him of benefiting at the expense of the nation, Sobhani remains unapologetic about his lifestyle.
Another notable figure is Anashid Hoseini, a model and fashion designer married to the son of Iran’s former ambassador to Denmark. With a substantial following on Instagram, Hoseini has faced scrutiny for her silence during the recent turmoil in Iran.
While some question her inaction during the crisis, Hoseini denies being part of the aghazadeh, dismissing such categorizations as baseless rumors.
Additionally, Mohammad Hossein Shamkhani and his brother Hassan, residing in Dubai, manage a successful shipping enterprise. The growing diaspora of affluent Iranians, including the grandchildren of Ayatollah Khomeini and relatives of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, residing in various countries like Canada, Britain, and France, further underscores the exodus of the elite class from Iran.
The departure of the children of influential figures from Iran has been a subject of ridicule, as highlighted by the mocking hashtag #Where_is_your_kid in 2018, pointing to the disconnect between the privileged few and the struggles faced by the general populace.
