Greenland PM Warns Against US Military Action

Greenland’s Prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, expressed concerns that while the United States is unlikely to resort to military action against Greenland, the possibility cannot be completely dismissed. This warning comes as former US President Donald Trump reiterated his intentions to potentially take control of the territory. Nielsen, speaking in Nuuk, along with former Prime Minister Mute B Egede, mentioned ongoing reviews of Greenland’s civil preparedness plans, including the consideration of households maintaining a five-day food supply. Both officials emphasized Greenland’s NATO membership and the broader consequences of any escalation beyond the island’s borders. They criticized Trump’s repeated threats and affirmed that Greenland would respond through diplomatic channels. Nielsen underscored the importance of respecting international law and territorial integrity, highlighting Greenland’s historical alliance with the US and NATO. The situation has sparked diplomatic activity in Europe, with discussions on potential countermeasures such as retaliatory tariffs and the use of the EU’s anti-coercion instrument. French President Macron warned of the possibility of implementing additional tariffs and utilizing the anti-coercion mechanism against the US for the first time. He emphasized the need for allied countries to focus on resolving conflicts like the situation in Ukraine. The anti-coercion instrument is seen as a potent tool in the current challenging global environment and could be deployed if necessary.
