Sydney Harbour beach visitors are urged to steer clear of ‘Shark Beach’ following a shark attack that left a child critically injured and hospitalized. South Wales police have issued a warning advising both locals and tourists to avoid Nielsen Park in Vaucluse, a popular swimming spot, after the incident. The beach has been closed, and swimmers are cautioned against entering the water at this time.
The boy, approximately 12 years old, was rescued near Nielsen Park by police after being attacked by the shark while reportedly jumping off rocks outside the netted area. The youngster sustained severe leg injuries and received immediate medical attention on a New South Wales Water Police vessel before being transported to Rose Bay West Boat Ramp for further treatment.
Nielsen Park, known as ‘Shark Beach,’ is typically a family-friendly destination with netted protection to ensure safe water activities. However, the installation of seasonal shark netting was delayed last year, causing concern. The boy was later airlifted to Sydney Children’s Hospital in Randwick for ongoing treatment.
The incident has prompted the closure of the area, and the public is advised to avoid the potentially dangerous waters until further notice.
