The economy has failed to benefit working individuals for an extended period.
In the past, the government prioritized turmoil and uncertainty over improving living standards. They opted not to allocate funds to enhance transportation systems such as trains, buses, and roads. They neglected investments in clean energy, future job opportunities, as well as educational and healthcare institutions. Without stability and financial backing, the economy remains stagnant.
Residents in the North have experienced the detrimental effects of insufficient investments firsthand – a reality I understand well after serving as a Leeds MP for 16 years.
Hence, I take pride in unveiling a substantial investment in Northern rail services, the most significant in a generation, in collaboration with local leaders to develop and implement the plan.
The introduction of Northern Powerhouse Rail will revolutionize travel by establishing improved connections among Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Bradford, Sheffield, and York, offering faster and more frequent services. These services will extend to destinations like Newcastle, Hull, and more.
Currently, individuals in Liverpool are serviced by just two fast trains per hour to Manchester, with a journey time of up to an hour and 25 minutes to Manchester Airport, a mere 28 miles away.
Residents of Leeds face the challenge of lacking efficient mass transit in the largest city in Western Europe, where only a third of the population can reach the city center within 30 minutes.
These issues are not merely inconveniences but significant barriers to employment, business growth, and family life in the North. The forthcoming investment aims to address these challenges by facilitating quicker commutes, enhanced connections, and more quality time with family instead of enduring platform delays. This initiative builds upon previous efforts.
Recent measures included a freeze on rail fares for the first time in three decades and maintaining the £3 bus fare cap, ensuring better financial outcomes for individuals. Establishing proper connections between major Northern cities will unlock their economic potential.
Manchester’s flourishing tech sector, Leeds’ prominence as the Northern hub for financial services, Sheffield’s advanced manufacturing industry, Liverpool’s focus on life sciences, and Newcastle’s leadership in clean energy highlight the diverse strengths awaiting further productivity growth in the North, potentially adding £40 billion annually to the national economy for improved public services.
Historically, governments have aimed to uplift the North, but promises of progress were unfulfilled as transportation systems deteriorated, causing individuals to seek opportunities elsewhere. This time, actions speak louder than words. The North, known for pioneering rail systems globally, is now set to benefit from revolutionary rail projects. No more empty pledges or neglect – this government is committed to delivering real change for the people.
