“Mother Sentenced to 5 Years in Hot Car Death”

A woman left her 10-month-old daughter unattended in a hot car while she was at work in a fast-food establishment. The woman, Hannah Faith Cormier, informed the authorities that she unintentionally left her baby inside the vehicle during her shift. The child was left in the car for approximately one-and-a-half hours.

The infant was quickly taken to a hospital in critical condition, but unfortunately, despite efforts to revive her, she passed away. Cormier was sentenced to five years in prison with hard labor by the Jefferson Davis Parish District Attorney’s Office, without the possibility of probation, parole, or sentence suspension, due to the victim’s age being under 10.

Cormier was arrested in August 2024 and later charged with negligent homicide on October 2 of the same year. She pleaded no contest to the charges. Negligent homicide in Louisiana is described as the unintentional killing of a person due to criminal negligence.

District Attorney Lauren Heinen expressed sorrow over the tragic loss of the 10-month-old baby, stating that the entire community was deeply affected. She emphasized the importance of protecting every child, even those who cannot advocate for themselves.

According to the US National Safety Council, 31 children died in the US in incidents where they were left in hot cars. On average, 37 children under the age of 15 perish annually from heatstroke after being left in vehicles. In 2018 and 2019, a record number of 53 children died under similar circumstances.
