“Storm Goretti Brings Heavy Snowfall Across UK”

Nearly 100 locations are expected to see snowfall by the end of today, according to the latest update from the Met Office.

As temperatures plummet, a cold spell is sweeping across various regions of England, Wales, and Scotland, bringing blizzard conditions and strong winds with the arrival of Storm Goretti. The Met Office has issued multiple warnings, including two amber alerts, forecasting heavy snowfall in many areas.

The impending storm is anticipated to disrupt travel on roads, air travel, and public transportation services, with potential power outages posing additional risks. The Met Office has cautioned that certain communities might face isolation, and mobile phone coverage could be impacted.

Snow warnings cover around 96 regions today, with significant snowfall expected in large parts of England and Wales, particularly in the Midlands and Wales where up to 30cm of snow is projected.

In more exposed areas, gusts of up to 90mph are likely to cause hazardous conditions, especially in the south-west where there is a potential risk to life.

The recent cold snap resulted in over 1,000 school closures across the UK, and Storm Goretti is expected to bring a complex weather event starting from midday on Thursday. Additionally, heavy and persistent rain is forecasted to move across eastern and northern England from Thursday night into Friday.

The Met Office’s latest statement indicates that Storm Goretti is likely to bring heavy snowfall, leading to disruptions in travel and challenging conditions. A deep low-pressure system moving across the southern UK will bring a mix of rain, snow, and strong winds.

The forecast suggests a spell of heavy snow over higher ground in south Wales on Thursday, with rain turning to snow more widely across parts of England and Wales later that night. Some areas could see 5-10 cm of snow accumulation, possibly reaching up to 20 cm in specific locations, especially in elevated areas.

The potential impact of snowy and wintry conditions on travel safety is emphasized, urging individuals to plan their routes carefully, check for delays and road closures, and ensure preparedness for any delays, including having essential items in their cars.
