An eight-year-old child fell victim to a heinous crime when a malevolent murderer abducted and killed him, then dismembered his body and stored his feet in a freezer. Levi Aron, the twisted perpetrator, passed away in prison last month, coinciding with the 15th anniversary of the appalling incident.
The tragic event unfolded when the young boy, Leiby Kletzky, ventured home alone for the first time. Lost and seeking directions, he encountered Aron, leading to a series of unfortunate events.
Recently, the spotlight returned to this tragedy following Aron’s demise, prompting a reflection on the chilling case. Leiby was en route from a religious camp in Borough Park, Brooklyn, on July 11, 2011, with plans for a halfway meeting with his mother. Despite practicing the route with his parents the day before, he went astray, seeking aid from Aron, ultimately meeting a tragic fate.
Aron confessed to diverting the child to a wedding in Rockland County before discovering the extensive search efforts upon his return home. Subsequently, he recounted spending time watching TV with the boy before heading to work the next day, only to prepare a sandwich for the captive child upon his return.
The Borough Park neighborhood in Brooklyn, home to a large Orthodox Jewish community, witnessed a massive volunteer search effort to locate the missing boy.
In a panicked state during the search, Aron drugged and suffocated Leiby, dismembering and discarding the remains, while retaining the child’s severed feet in his freezer near the boy’s residence.
On July 13, authorities visited Aron’s residence after spotting blood traces on his refrigerator, unveiling a grim scene with bloodied tools and body parts. Aron revealed the location of the boy’s remaining body parts in a nearby dumpster.
Following his arrest, Aron admitted to the kidnapping and murder, receiving a prison sentence of 40 years to life for the atrocious act against the young member of the Hasidic Borough Park community. Nearly 15 years into his sentence, Aron passed away at 49 in a hospital on December 3, following a medical issue that led to his hospitalization from the Wende Correctional Facility.
Family members of Aron, who faced threats after the murder and remained in Brooklyn, requested an autopsy following his death. The victim’s father, Nachman Kletzky, described the loss of his son as “utterly reckless, malicious, and wanton,” refraining from commenting on Aron’s demise.
