A television host is advocating for a complete prohibition on fireworks following a tragic New Year’s incident that resulted in severe injuries. Andrea Plewig, 55, the presenter of the show “Astro Royal,” suffered a serious mishap at home when a firework she lit malfunctioned, leading to the loss of her left eye.
Recounting the event, Plewig mentioned how she meticulously handled the fireworks, ensuring safety measures were in place. Despite her precautions, a rocket misfired prematurely, striking her eye and causing excruciating pain.
This unfortunate event occurred shortly after Plewig had completed a taxing round of chemotherapy for breast cancer. Despite efforts by medical professionals, her injured eye could not be saved. Despite her personal struggles, Plewig is now advocating for stricter controls on private fireworks usage and is endorsing the “No To Fireworks” campaign.
In the United Kingdom, this cause is supported by various organizations such as The Firework Campaign UK, the RSPCA, and Help for Heroes. The proponents are urging for more stringent regulations to reduce the negative effects of fireworks on animals, veterans, and vulnerable individuals. Their demands include banning public sales, reducing noise levels, and restricting pyrotechnic displays to licensed public events.

Her close friend and fellow TV host, Vera Int-Veen, 58, expressed shock over Plewig’s accident and pledged unwavering support. Int-Veen highlighted the solidarity among their friends during Plewig’s cancer battle and the current challenging period.
Despite completing her breast cancer treatment and receiving a clean bill of health, Plewig still requires surgery. Her advocacy for stricter fireworks regulations underscores the persistent concerns surrounding the dangers of private pyrotechnic use, particularly in domestic environments.
