Two teenagers tragically lost their lives when a hand-dug sand tunnel collapsed on them, leaving a community in shock.
George Watts and Derrick Hubbard, both 14 and best friends, had been working on the tunnel for two weeks, turning what was supposed to be a fun childhood adventure into a devastating event, according to George’s mother, Jasmine Watts.
The pair, known to be extremely close, were inside the tunnel when it caved in on Sunday, January 11. Concern arose when they didn’t return home for lunch and couldn’t be reached on their phones.
After being reported missing, the boys were eventually found at Sportsman Park in Inverness, Florida, thanks to a parent receiving an alert from their child’s phone. Their belongings were discovered near the collapsed tunnel.
Rescuers took around 30 minutes to extricate the boys, who were estimated to be buried four to five feet underground. Derrick passed away at the hospital, while George succumbed to his injuries early on Tuesday, January 13.
A GoFundMe campaign was launched to support the grieving families, with Jasmine providing a heartfelt tribute to the two boys, describing them as inseparable companions who grew up like siblings.
Coach Corey Edwards, reminiscing about the boys, referred to them as “old school,” highlighting their love for outdoor activities untouched by modern technology. He emphasized the unpredictability of the tragic accident.
The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office pledged its support to the affected families and community, urging unity and compassion during the healing process.
