The White House under Donald Trump has announced an impromptu press conference scheduled for today. The daily agenda has been modified to include a briefing by Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt. The specific topic of the conference remains undisclosed, though it comes in the wake of heightened public outrage following the fatal shooting of an unarmed woman by an ICE agent in Minnesota.
Since early morning, a large group of demonstrators has gathered outside an immigration enforcement center in St. Paul, Minnesota, in response to the shooting of Renee Nicole Good, a mother of three, by an ICE agent as she was trying to drive away.
The press conference is set to take place at 1 pm in Washington DC, corresponding to 6 pm UK time. Following the incident, Trump posted on Truth Social, falsely claiming that video evidence showed the ICE agent being run over by the driver, who he alleged to be injured, despite no such evidence existing.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, after viewing the footage, dismissed Trump’s statements as propaganda and criticized the chaotic response to the situation. He expressed disbelief at the premature conclusions drawn by the federal government regarding the incident.
Video footage of the event depicts an officer firing multiple shots at the driver as the vehicle veered away, eventually crashing into parked cars. No other officers were in immediate danger during the incident, and the shooter walked away unscathed.
Within hours of the shooting, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem labeled the event as an act of domestic terrorism, claiming the ICE officers were attacked by the woman while trying to free their stuck vehicle from the snow.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey contradicted the official narrative from the Department for Homeland Security, stating that the shooting was not an act of self-defense but a reckless misuse of power resulting in a tragic death. Frey condemned the actions of the ICE agents, emphasizing their responsibility to ensure public safety.
