“Trump Seeks $100B Oil Investments Amid Venezuela Seizures”

President Donald Trump held discussions with oil industry leaders to secure investments totaling $100 billion aimed at accessing Venezuela’s oil reserves, while US forces took control of an oil tanker in the Caribbean Sea. The meeting, which took place on January 9 at the White House, involved top oil company executives. Despite expressing interest, the executives voiced concerns due to previous asset seizures in Venezuela.

ExxonMobil’s CEO, Darren Woods, the largest US oil company executive present, commented on the current investment climate in Venezuela, describing it as challenging. ExxonMobil plans to send a team to evaluate the situation, having experienced asset seizures in Venezuela before. Other companies at the meeting included Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Halliburton, Valero, Marathon, and Shell.

President Trump assured the executives of their safety, emphasizing that they would be dealing directly with the US government rather than with Venezuela. He highlighted that US oil companies would invest $100 billion of their own funds and emphasized the need for government protection.

Regarding Venezuela’s political situation, President Maduro and his wife were apprehended by US forces earlier in the month. Trump reiterated the importance of working with Venezuelan leaders for security guarantees rather than deploying US military forces. The US has also seized multiple oil tankers in the region recently, as part of efforts to combat illicit oil trading.

Secretary of Energy Chris Wright mentioned that it could take several years for Venezuela’s oil production to recover to previous levels. Currently, Venezuela’s daily oil production is below one million barrels. The country’s energy sector faces challenges, with ongoing sanctions and political instability affecting its operations.
