A truck has struck pedestrians multiple times in a town, with reports of gunshots and emergency services responding to the scene. The incident took place in Gangkou, Zhongshan, China, where witnesses observed the driver hitting people and gunshots being fired. Videos circulating online depict a white van driving recklessly, colliding with other vehicles while driving on the wrong side of the road.
One video shows the van reversing after hitting a person on the ground, with emergency services arriving with flashing lights. Shouting and screaming can be heard in the background as the lorry driver’s actions unfold. Another clip captures police cars blocking the van, which attempts to escape, leading to people smashing the van’s windows and eventually pulling out the driver.
Social media platforms have been flooded with accounts of the incident, although the police have not issued an official statement. According to reports, the lorry driver tried to breach a police blockade, prompting officers to fire at the vehicle in an effort to halt it. The truck struck pedestrians, including an individual on an electric bike, while trying to flee.
Gangkou, situated in Guangdong province, is a bustling urban area in southern China known for its port-related commercial activities. Many individuals on social media have expressed outrage towards the lorry driver, with some referencing a tragic event in Zhuhai where 38 people lost their lives and 48 were injured in November 2024 when a motorist plowed into a crowd at a sports center.
During that previous incident, bodies were strewn across the ground as witnesses rushed to aid the injured before emergency services arrived. The distressing scene unfolded outside the Zhuhai Sports Centre, where witnesses informed local media that the victims were part of a group of middle-aged and elderly individuals exercising on the track.
In a statement, the police mentioned, “A passenger car struck several pedestrians at the sports center in Xiangzhou District of Zhuhai City and fled the scene.” The driver, identified as Fan Weiqiu, was reportedly dissatisfied with a divorce settlement and had attempted to end his life with a knife.
