In a globally captivating case, Susan Smith, a 23-year-old woman, made a report to authorities in Union, South Carolina on October 25, 1994, claiming that her car, with her two young children – three-year-old Michael and 14-month-old Alexander – inside, had been stolen by a Black man.
Over the following nine days, she made emotional appearances on television, appealing for the safe return of her sons, as hundreds of individuals joined the search effort, hopeful for a positive outcome. However, the situation took a shocking turn when it was revealed that Smith had fabricated the entire story.
Subsequently, Smith confessed that both her children and her car were submerged at the bottom of a nearby lake. She admitted to orchestrating a tragic scheme, hoping to gain back the affection of a wealthy former romantic partner. Smith’s troubled past included a father’s suicide when she was six years old and enduring abuse from her mother’s partner during her teenage years, which persisted until shortly before the tragic events.
Following a tumultuous upbringing, marked by two suicide attempts during her high school years, Smith faced trial and was diagnosed with dependent personality disorder and major depression. Despite her defense framing the case as one of despair rather than malice, prosecutors pointed to a letter from her lover, a wealthy businessman’s son, as the motive behind the heinous act.
The letter revealed the lover’s decision to end their relationship due to his reluctance to take on a paternal role for Smith’s children. Prosecutors argued that upon receiving this news, Smith believed that eliminating her children was the only way to reclaim her lover’s affections and begin anew.
While her defense proposed an alternative scenario suggesting Smith intended a joint suicide with her sons, evidence indicated that she had the opportunity to save them before the car submerged completely in the lake. The swift decision by the jury to find Smith guilty of murder was reached in just two and a half hours.
Consequently, Smith was sentenced to life imprisonment rather than the death penalty, with the jury aiming for introspection on her crimes. In a 2024 parole appeal, Smith expressed remorse and newfound religious faith, but her plea was unanimously rejected by the parole board.
David Smith, Susan’s ex-husband and father of the deceased boys, emotionally pleaded against her release, emphasizing that her actions were deliberate and not a tragic error. Reports in 2022 indicated Smith engaging in inappropriate relationships while incarcerated, further complicating her already tragic story.
