Skiing icon Lindsey Vonn endured a dramatic crash during the women’s downhill alpine skiing final at the Winter Olympics on Sunday. Vonn, aged 41, returned to the slopes just nine days after suffering a severe left ruptured anterior cruciate ligament injury.
Unfortunately, Vonn’s comeback took a tragic turn as she crashed early in her run, prompting immediate medical attention and requiring her to be stretchered off. The distressing sight of Vonn in pain left spectators in shock as she was airlifted to presumably receive further medical care at a nearby hospital.
Commentator Graham Bell, a five-time Olympic skier, expressed dismay at the incident while covering the event for BBC Two. He highlighted Vonn’s dedication and the risks she took to compete, acknowledging the disappointment of the outcome.
Former British downhill skier Chemmy Alcott, who raced alongside Vonn, emotionally remarked on the tragic turn of events. Alcott described the challenging nature of the course and the immense pressure Vonn faced, reflecting on the hopes for a successful run that ended in devastation.
Vonn’s previous injury on January 30 resulted in a hospital visit, but she remarkably recovered in time for the Olympics. The crash during the downhill event dashed her hopes for a successful performance, leading to a temporary halt in the competition.
Following Vonn’s crash, another skier, Cande Moreno, also suffered a fall on the course, adding to the tense atmosphere of the day’s events. The incident underscored the dangers and risks inherent in competitive skiing.
