Sabalenka Dominates at U.S. Open, Eyeing Three-Peat

Aryna Sabalenka arrived at the U.S. Open facing challenges and the risk of losing her top ranking. However, she has now advanced to the third round with a commanding performance. The top-seeded Sabalenka dominated Polina Iatcenko with a 6-1, 6-1 victory in just 53 minutes on Wednesday night, showcasing her strong power-hitting abilities and indicating a return to form.

Several matches were delayed due to rain, causing interruptions on outdoor courts while play continued smoothly under the roofs of Arthur Ashe Stadium and Louis Armstrong Stadium. As a result, players on these covered courts avoided the disruptions faced by others.

Carlos Alcaraz also progressed to the next round after defeating Jaime Faria 4-6, 6-0, 6-3, 6-2. Jessica Pegula secured a quick victory over Sofia Kenin in 56 minutes with a score of 6-3, 6-1. Ben Shelton and Daniil Medvedev also clinched wins in their respective matches.

Sabalenka expressed satisfaction with her performance, emphasizing her mental and physical strength compared to earlier in the season. She aims to become the first player since Serena Williams in 2012-2014 to achieve a three-peat at Flushing Meadows. Despite facing recent setbacks, Sabalenka’s dominant display on the court against a Grand Slam debutant showcased her improved form.

The U.S. Open’s scheduling changes led to a prolonged first round, with matches spilling over into the fourth day due to weather disruptions. Players like Alex de Minaur and Paula Badosa adapted to the challenges, with de Minaur emphasizing the necessity of flexibility in tournament play.

Despite uncertainties and delays, players like Alexander Zverev, Coco Gauff, and others advanced in the tournament. The completion of the first round on Wednesday marked a pivotal moment in getting the competition back on track, with notable victories and upsets witnessed on the courts.
