Canadians are increasingly encountering bears in regions like B.C., Alberta, and Saskatchewan, with some interactions turning fatal, though such incidents are very rare, experts say.
Lana Ciarniello, a conservation scientist specializing in human-bear conflict, noted that various factors, including heightened media coverage, contribute to the perception of rising bear encounters. She emphasized that encounters with black bears can vary annually due to factors like food availability and habitat disruptions, which can lead to more interactions with humans.
Ciarniello highlighted the current situation, citing dried-out berries and wildfires as potential drivers of conflicts this year. To mitigate risks, communities should implement “bear-smart” practices such as securing garbage properly.
In dealing with grizzly bear encounters in backcountry areas, additional environmental and behavioral considerations come into play. Factors like berry season and dense foliage can impede hikers’ ability to detect bears early. Ciarniello advised preventive measures such as making noise while hiking, traveling in groups, and carrying bear spray to minimize negative interactions.
Recent incidents in Canada include a 72-year-old hiker sustaining injuries from a grizzly bear attack near Pemberton, B.C., and a man surviving a defensive grizzly encounter in the same area. Additionally, a three-year-old girl was attacked by a black bear in her backyard, and a couple tragically lost their lives in a black bear attack in Saskatchewan. Another fatal black bear attack claimed the life of a 27-year-old man at a work site in northeastern Saskatchewan.
Efforts to enhance awareness and safety measures are crucial in reducing human-bear conflicts and ensuring the well-being of both wildlife and communities.
