“Reviving Family Tradition: Dinner on the Mat Unites Generations”

In Delta, B.C., reminiscing about cherished childhood moments brings to mind family dinners enjoyed while seated cross-legged on a small beige mat. The setting sun’s warm amber glow through the curtains illuminated the room as we savored delectable Pakistani dishes. Whether it was the aromatic biryani with saffron or the creamy butter chicken and homemade naan, these meals symbolized a tradition passed down from my father’s upbringing in Lahore to our family in the quiet suburbs of north Delta.

Emphasizing the significance of eating together on the ground, my father instilled in us a sense of gratitude for the food we shared. Beyond a mere meal, this practice represented the ties binding us as a family and the appreciation of our cultural heritage spanning generations.

As time passed, the busyness of life took its toll, and the tradition of family dinners on the mat faded away. Over a decade had slipped by since we last gathered in that familiar circle.

The revival of this tradition occurred unexpectedly during a Thanksgiving dinner when I invited friends to partake in our family custom. Setting up the worn-out beige mat in the living room, we recreated the circle, sharing a Thanksgiving feast on the ground. The simplicity of this act drew my father to join us, bridging the gap between our heritage traditions and Canadian customs.

Inspired by the Thanksgiving experience, my father decided to resurrect the tradition at home. Once again, we found ourselves sharing stories and food on the mat, rediscovering the bond it fostered amidst our hectic lives. The act of coming together, passing plates, and connecting as a family became a cherished ritual, reminding us of the importance of togetherness.

Now, as the sun sets, casting a warm glow through the curtains, we prioritize dinner time on the same beige mat, surrounded by a variety of dishes. Whether on the mat or around a dining table, the essence of togetherness endures, strengthening family ties not just during holidays but throughout the year, echoing the traditions of the past and those yet to come.
