The debut of the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham faced a setback at the beginning of the event. This year marks Markham’s first hosting of the event, previously held at Toronto’s Exhibition Place since its inception in 1986. J. Douglas Boles, president of IndyCar, expressed disappointment at the delay in completing the track build despite support from the team on-site. He acknowledged the strong fan turnout and apologized for the logistical challenges.
Local fans Mark Coburn and Scott Stobo, who have been attending the race for two decades, shared mixed feelings about the delay. They emphasized the importance of safety but expressed disappointment at the lack of on-track action throughout the day.
The decision to move the event from downtown Toronto to Markham was announced last September by IndyCar and the City of Markham. The new circuit, constructed for the first time this week, spans Kennedy Road, Enterprise Boulevard, the Unionville GO tracks, and Highway 407.
Various features of the track, such as a pedestrian bridge and safety fencing modifications, remained incomplete. Despite initial skepticism about the location, organizers and fans are looking forward to a thrilling race experience once the track is ready.
Significant government investments, including $1.5 million from the Ontario government and $3.5 million from the federal government, have been made in the event. Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti confirmed substantial capital spending for race-related infrastructure upgrades.
Friday’s activities at the IndyCar race were open to the public, with donations to the Make-A-Wish Foundation encouraged in place of ticket purchases. Fans enjoyed off-track events and interactions with drivers, compensating for the lack of on-track action.
Saturday’s schedule is packed with practice sessions and qualifying rounds, promising an exciting race day. Boles expressed confidence in the circuit’s quality and thanked the city of Markham for its support in creating a fast and technical layout.
In addition to IndyCar, other racing series like USF2000 Championship, USF Pro 2000, Radical Cup Canada, and NASCAR Canada Series will also showcase their races over the weekend. Despite the delays and challenges, the anticipation for a thrilling race day remains high among participants and fans alike.
