“Ontario Cyclist Bitten by Aggressive Coyote at Cabot Trail”

A cyclist traveling through Cape Breton Highlands National Park recently shared an encounter with an aggressive coyote that left him with a bite. Despite this incident, the camper described his overall experience on the Cabot Trail as peaceful.

Alex Radu, from Ontario, recounted being at MacIntosh Brook campsite admiring the moon when the coyote suddenly approached him. In response, Radu attempted to intimidate the animal by making loud noises and gestures, but the coyote persisted in getting closer and snapping at him. Feeling trapped, Radu fled to a nearby building for safety.

Upon inspecting his leg later, Radu discovered bite marks and torn clothing, necessitating medical attention. He reported the incident to park authorities the following day and received treatment for his wounds, including a rabies vaccine as a precautionary measure.

Parks Canada confirmed that a coyote displaying unusual behavior was euthanized in the MacIntosh Brook area. The ecologist, Allison Moody, advised visitors to stay calm, back away slowly, and report any encounters with aggressive wildlife to park staff.

Despite the unsettling incident, Radu emphasized that his time at Cape Breton Highlands National Park was filled with positive experiences. He encouraged visitors to exercise caution, use bear spray if necessary, and stay vigilant while enjoying the park’s natural beauty.
