“Mother Overcomes Fear to Empower Son with Severe Allergy”

A Winnipeg mother, Morgan Klachefsky, shared her experience of dealing with her son’s severe cashew and pistachio allergy, which was discovered when he had an anaphylactic reaction at 18 months old. The incident led her to become overprotective, constantly worrying about her son’s safety and controlling his environment to prevent exposure to allergens.

Driven by fear and the desire to keep her son safe, Klachefsky underwent extensive education on anaphylactic allergies and equipped herself with the necessary knowledge and tools to manage the situation. However, as her son, Simon, grew older and more independent, she realized the need to balance vigilance with trust in others.

Over time, Klachefsky learned to let go of her controlling behavior and allow Simon more freedom while ensuring he understood how to manage his allergies responsibly. She taught him to read labels, administer an EpiPen, and communicate his dietary restrictions to others. Through gradual exposure to social situations and positive experiences, both mother and son gained confidence in navigating the challenges posed by his allergies.

Despite her initial apprehension, Klachefsky eventually allowed Simon to attend a sleepaway camp, a significant milestone that marked a shift towards greater independence and trust in her son’s ability to handle his allergies. This experience taught her the importance of gradually letting go and allowing her son to explore the world while providing him with the necessary tools and knowledge to stay safe.

As Simon continues to grow and gain more autonomy, Klachefsky emphasizes the importance of education, trust, and open communication in managing his allergies. By fostering a supportive environment and empowering her son to take charge of his health, she believes they can navigate future challenges with resilience and courage.
