A man has been sentenced to a minimum of 16 years in prison for coercing a woman to engage in sexual activities with potentially up to 1,000 men over a span of three decades. Although the exact number cannot be confirmed, the court heard that it could be as high as a thousand individuals within a 30-year period.
Rodney Johnston, 67, from Starston in Norfolk, was found guilty during a trial in September of threatening the woman into participating in various sexual acts with men at remote countryside locations, hotels, and in vehicles. These encounters, which involved up to 15 men and often lasted for hours, were documented through photographs and videos by Johnston.
Describing the victim’s impact statement as “harrowing,” Judge Alice Robinson emphasized the severe and lasting effects of the abuse on the victim. Police discovered a collection of over 30,000 images and videos depicting the abuse, with the woman being coerced to engage in sexual activities with men up to five nights a week.
The court convicted Johnston of multiple offenses spanning from 1994 to 2024, including procuring a woman for sexual intercourse by threats, causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent, and intimidating a witness. Throughout the trial, Johnston denied the charges, alleging that the acts were consensual. However, police presented evidence supporting the woman’s claims of coercion and exploitation.
Johnston was revealed to have sent mass text messages to men he had connected with through adult social networks, advertising opportunities for sexual encounters with the woman. While he dismissed many of these messages as mere “banter” and fulfilling a “fantasy,” the police highlighted numerous messages corroborating the victim’s version of events.
Following Johnston’s sentencing, the victim expressed her ordeal as an unimaginable situation that led to enduring unbearable suffering. She referred to Johnston as a monster who treated her as an object, leaving her feeling degraded, humiliated, and terrified. Despite the challenges ahead, she expressed a sense of freedom after decades of abuse.
Family members of the victim conveyed their pride in her courage, while Senior Investigating Officer Duncan Woodhams commended her bravery in coming forward. Woodhams emphasized the meticulous work involved in compiling evidence and acknowledged the victim’s trust in enabling a comprehensive presentation of Johnston’s prolonged and abhorrent abuse.
Police authorities announced a subsequent investigation to identify other individuals involved in the abuse, with a focus on potentially prosecuting them for their roles. They assured a thorough inquiry to uncover any additional offenses and bring all responsible parties to justice, urging other abuse survivors to come forward for support and justice.
