Man Charged with Vandalism at Saskatoon Synagogue

A 31-year-old man from Dundurn, Saskatchewan, has been charged with mischief related to an incident of vandalism at a synagogue in Saskatoon, according to city police. The vandalism occurred during a prayer service at the Congregation Agudas Israel synagogue on August 1. The man allegedly threw eggs at various vehicles and parts of the building.

After releasing a surveillance photo of the suspect, police received tips from the public leading to his identification. The man voluntarily surrendered to the police on Thursday and was subsequently released with conditions pending his initial court appearance.

Although the Saskatoon police hate crimes unit was involved in the investigation, the suspect is currently facing mischief charges and not hate crime charges. Superintendent James Oliver clarified that in Canadian law, “hate crime” is a general term and not a specific criminal charge under the Criminal Code. However, evidence of bias, prejudice, or hate can be considered an aggravating factor during sentencing.

While the charges were based on available evidence, the prosecution may amend them later if further evidence supports it. Rabbi Claudio Jodorkovsky expressed concern about the vandalism occurring in broad daylight but also expressed trust in the safety of the Jewish community in Saskatoon. Statistics from Statistics Canada show that 70% of police-reported hate crimes against religious groups in 2024 targeted the Jewish community.
