Joseph Kushner, a longtime council member in St. Catharines, Ontario, has acquired several nicknames over his almost 50-year tenure. Known as “Doctor No,” “Professor Negative,” “Frosty the No-man,” and “No Joe Kushner,” he proudly upheld his reputation for being frugal with public funds, likening his approach to managing taxpayer money to his own finances.
At 85 years old, Kushner has decided to step down from his council position and retire as an economics professor at Brock University to care for his wife and address his health concerns following brain tumor surgery. His colleague, Coun. Matt Harris, commended Kushner for his fiscal conservatism and community contributions, highlighting his tendency to prioritize practicality over flashy projects.
In honor of his retirement, a second edition of a biography titled “Canada’s Longest-Serving Councillor” has been released, chronicling Kushner’s journey serving under seven different mayors. Co-author Wesley Turner, a historian and former colleague of Kushner, emphasized the significance of documenting Kushner’s remarkable half-century in municipal service.
While Kushner is widely recognized for his extensive public service, his interests extend beyond politics. He is an avid animal lover, particularly fond of rabbits, and actively volunteers at the Humane Society of Greater Niagara. Additionally, Kushner’s passion for antique telephones and knowledge of World War II history are evident in his collection of vintage telecommunication devices and engaging storytelling.
Despite his busy schedule, Kushner finds time to indulge in his favorite Ukrainian dishes, with a preference for his mother’s cabbage rolls. Those interested in delving deeper into Kushner’s life story can purchase copies of the biography from the Humane Society of Greater Niagara, with proceeds benefiting the animal shelter.
