The leader of the Labour Party has cautioned Vladimir Putin about the UK’s close observation of Russia’s activities in British waters following the detection of a suspicious vessel in the Channel. Anna Turley praised Keir Starmer’s collaboration with allies, specifically commending his efforts on the global front. An oil tanker named Tavian, presumed to be linked to Putin’s covert fleet, was tracked heading towards Finland, passing north of Guernsey during the early morning hours.
In a statement to Sky News, Labour Party chair Ms. Turley expressed confidence in the government’s monitoring capabilities in the surrounding waters and lauded Starmer’s recent international engagements, emphasizing the importance of upholding international law to ensure safety and security amid Russian activities.
This development occurred shortly after the UK assisted the United States in apprehending a Russian-flagged tanker in the North Atlantic. Scottish Secretary Douglas Alexander highlighted the vessel, known as Marinera, as part of the clandestine fleet supporting Russia’s operations in Ukraine. The UK’s collaboration with allies like the US was deemed essential in countering Russian efforts to bypass sanctions. The operation, supported by RAF surveillance aircraft and RFA Tideforce, successfully intercepted the vessel, which had been sailing towards Scotland through the waters between Iceland and Scotland.
Following the operation, the US military’s European Command acknowledged the UK’s crucial support. Mr. Alexander, speaking on BBC Radio Scotland, underscored the importance of thwarting illicit financial support for Russia’s military actions, emphasizing the need for allied cooperation in addressing ongoing sanction violations by Russia.
Efforts to disrupt the funding channels sustaining Putin’s military actions remain a top priority for UK authorities and international partners.
