Prime Minister Mark Carney has designated Jeremy Hansen as a special adviser on space, coinciding with heightened attention from the United States on Canada’s pivot towards European space collaborations. Hansen expressed his enthusiasm for serving Canada in this capacity, highlighting the potential to enhance sovereignty, security, quality of life, and global contributions.
Hansen’s responsibilities include providing counsel to Carney and Industry Minister Mélanie Joly. Following his participation in the Artemis II mission, where he and three other astronauts voyaged farther into space than ever before, Hansen proposed crafting a new space strategy upon departing from the Canadian Space Agency.
Joly mentioned Hansen’s initiative to assist in shaping the government’s space strategy, emphasizing the aim to accelerate innovation and bolster international partnerships with insights from Canadian astronauts and aerospace experts. Details regarding Hansen’s role specifics, such as duration and compensation, were not disclosed by Carney and Joly’s offices upon inquiry.
In a separate development, Defence Minister David McGuinty announced a $20 million agreement for utilizing a space launch facility in southern Newfoundland, complementing a prior agreement involving a complex in Nova Scotia. This agreement aims to ensure reliable launch access for placing critical satellites into orbit, safeguarding national interests and operational continuity amid global uncertainties.
Amid Canada’s exploration of enhanced collaboration with European nations in space, U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra highlighted Canada’s shift away from partnering with SpaceX, favoring closer ties with the European Space Agency. Hoekstra acknowledged Canada’s decision and emphasized the U.S.’s inclination towards private sector involvement in space missions, emphasizing competition as a driver of excellence.
Hoekstra also touched on the U.S.’s perspective on the F-35 jet and Canada’s defense re-evaluation, emphasizing a readiness to continue airspace cooperation through NORAD. He underscored the significance of ongoing U.S. initiatives in the North to enhance security, expressing openness to collaboration with Canada while emphasizing the U.S.’s proactive stance.
