The Federal Court has mandated the disclosure of previously hidden sections of a September 1986 report commissioned for a significant federal investigation on wartime atrocities. Federal Court Justice Simon Fothergill, in a recent public declaration, directed the government to unveil redacted segments of the report focusing on the integration of suspected Nazi war criminals into Canada post-World War II.
Over the years, B’nai Brith Canada has persistently advocated for greater transparency regarding the study conducted by researcher Alti Rodal. In response to B’nai Brith’s information request, Library and Archives Canada released additional portions of the report in February 2024. However, certain sections, particularly those detailing the involvement of American intelligence agencies in aiding the relocation of Nazi collaborators to Canada, were still withheld by Library and Archives.
In a decisive move, Fothergill dismissed the government’s claim that revealing specific details would adversely impact Canada’s international relations.
