“Global Wildlife Gets Boost: Largest Animal Crossing Underway in L.A.”

Global temperatures saw a slight decrease in 2025, but concerns persist regarding the ongoing impact of climate change on communities worldwide. Wildlife faces significant threats due to changing habitats and deteriorating environmental conditions.

Despite these challenges, various organizations and activists are working diligently to create safer environments for animals globally. One effective approach involves constructing infrastructure to facilitate wildlife movement across man-made barriers.

The Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing, currently being built northwest of Los Angeles, is set to become the largest animal crossing globally upon completion. This £68 million project over the 101 Freeway in Agoura Hills has been in planning for decades.

Construction began in early 2022, with an initial target opening date in early 2026. However, due to adverse weather conditions causing delays, the launch has been rescheduled to November 2026. Beth Pratt, a project spokesperson, mentioned that storms necessitated redoing work, primarily on the massive supports and surrounding groundwork.

Despite the setback in completion time, there is optimism about the crossing’s positive impact on local wildlife, with estimates indicating a significant reduction in animal-vehicle collisions. A similar crossing in Utah has already cut such incidents by 77%.

Beth, also serving as California’s regional director for the National Wildlife Federation, emphasized the critical need to protect wildlife and prevent species extinction. The bridge is named after Wallis Annenberg, a philanthropist who played a vital role in the project and passed away last year.

Wallis was known for her support of environmental causes, science, and education initiatives. Her family shared that she transitioned peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of wisdom and dedication.
