Envoi Allen tragically passed away following his participation in the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Veterinary professionals rushed to his aid when he collapsed while returning to the stables after the race.
This marks the third equine fatality at this year’s Festival, with Hansard and HMS Seahorse also succumbing, though due to falls.
Cheveley Park Stud, the horse’s owners, had announced that the 12-year-old Envoi Allen’s final race before retirement would be at this event. He placed ninth, being the oldest contender and finishing just behind The Jukebox Man, owned by Harry Redknapp. Gaelic Warrior emerged victorious in the Gold Cup as the joint-favorite, triumphing by eight lengths over Jango Baie in second place and Inothewayurthinkin in third.
A spokesperson for Cheltenham Racecourse expressed deep sorrow over Envoi Allen’s sudden demise and praised his exceptional talent and achievements.
Following Envoi Allen’s unfortunate fate, another horse, Saint Le Fort, also met a tragic end after falling during the final race of the week, bringing the total equine fatalities at the 2026 Festival to four.
Envoi Allen’s jockey, Darragh O’Keeffe, recounted the moments leading to the horse’s collapse, highlighting Envoi Allen’s remarkable career and sudden loss.
Richard Thompson, representing the horse’s owners, expressed shock and sadness over the unexpected turn of events, emphasizing Envoi Allen’s outstanding contributions to the sport.
Andrew Thornton, the jockey who won the Gold Cup, and commentator John Hunt paid their respects to the late Envoi Allen, acknowledging his impressive career and loyal fan base.
The racing community mourned the loss of Envoi Allen, a seasoned champion who had won 17 races out of 31 and earned over £1 million in prize money. The Jockey Club reiterated its commitment to equine welfare and highlighted ongoing efforts to enhance safety measures at racing events.
The Jockey Club also provided statistics showing a decline in fall rates and fatal injuries in horse races over the years. They outlined various improvements implemented to ensure the well-being of horses during races and emphasized collaboration with key welfare organizations to maintain high standards.
