A tragic incident unfolded in north-eastern Thailand as a construction crane fell onto a passenger train in motion, resulting in a deadly derailment that claimed the lives of at least 29 individuals. The accident also left 64 people injured, with ongoing rescue efforts to assist those affected.
The derailment occured on a section of a high-speed rail project intended to link China with various parts of south-east Asia. The crane, utilized for constructing an elevated railway segment, toppled while the train was en route from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani province.
Images captured at the scene depicted billows of smoke rising above the site, with construction machinery hanging precariously between concrete pillars. Rescuers navigated overturned railway carriages, some displaying significant damage, as they attended to injured passengers.
Transport minister Piphat Ratchakitprakan disclosed that 195 individuals were onboard the train and initiated an investigation into the incident. The collapsed elevated segment forms part of a joint Thai-Chinese initiative aiming to connect Bangkok with Nong Khai province on the Laos border.
