Canada’s foreign affairs minister announced that sanctions will be imposed on five high-ranking Iranian officials for their involvement in activities in the Strait of Hormuz that are deemed to undermine international peace. The minister emphasized the significance of freedom of navigation through the strait for global trade and energy security. The sanctioned individuals, including members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), have been identified for engaging in actions that pose threats to global economic and energy security.
The targeted officials are Ali Abdollahi, Commander of Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters and a senior IRGC official; Lt.-Col. Ebrahim Zolfaghari, spokesperson for Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters; Ebrahim Azizi, head of the Iranian parliament’s national security and foreign policy committee; Shahram Irani, Commander of Artesh, the Iranian navy; and Hamid Hosseini, Chair of the board of directors and spokesperson for the Iranian Oil, Gas and Petrochemical Products Exporters Union.
This move brings the total number of individuals and entities from Iran’s security, intelligence, and economic sectors facing Canadian sanctions to 232 individuals and 260 entities. These sanctions are part of ongoing efforts to pressure for an end to the conflict involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran, as previous peace agreements have not been realized. The situation has led to disruptions in global oil shipping routes, affecting the economy and necessitating continued international diplomatic efforts.
