Amazon to Close Milton Keynes Fulfilment Center, 590 Jobs Affected

Amazon is set to shut down a fulfilment center in Milton Keynes, affecting 590 jobs. The closure follows a consultation process initiated by the company. The impacted employees will have the option to relocate to the new Amazon facility in Northampton or to other centers.

The upcoming £500 million Northampton site, scheduled to open in May, will initially hire 1,400 individuals, with plans to increase to 2,000 employees. While the fulfilment center in Milton Keynes is being closed, the Amazon sortation center in the same location remains unaffected by the decision.

An Amazon spokesperson highlighted that the company continuously assesses its network to align with business requirements and enhance the experience for both staff and customers. The priority remains to provide support to affected employees during this transition.

In a separate development, Amazon disclosed that it has commenced testing drone flights in preparation for the launch of its airborne delivery service in the UK by 2026. The trials, starting from the Darlington base, aim to offer eligible customers in Darlington expedited delivery of packages weighing under five pounds within a two-hour window.

The drone technology deployed by Amazon is designed to operate quietly, with noise levels comparable to traditional van deliveries. The drones are equipped with advanced systems to detect and avoid obstacles during flight, ensuring safe and efficient deliveries. Amazon is collaborating closely with local authorities and aviation regulators to advance drone delivery services in the UK.
