Blue Jays to Honor Broadcaster Buck Martinez

The Toronto Blue Jays are set to honor veteran broadcaster Buck Martinez by inducting him into the team’s newly established Hall of Excellence at Rogers Centre this Saturday. Martinez, who recently retired after calling over 4,000 games, dedicated almost forty years to the Blue Jays, serving as a player, manager, and broadcaster.

Expressing his gratitude, Martinez described the induction as a surprising but esteemed recognition during an interview with CBC Radio’s “Metro Morning.” He credited Blue Jays fans for embracing him throughout the years, making him feel like a part of their families. Known for his distinctive broadcasting style and iconic catchphrases like “a swing and a drive” and “get outta here ball,” Martinez’s influence stemmed from his return to Toronto in 2010 and his experiences in Milwaukee.

Reflecting on his transition from player to broadcaster, Martinez shared that retirement marked a significant change after being involved in professional baseball since 1967. Despite intending to participate in the Jays’ 50th season celebrations, health concerns, including a second battle with cancer in 2025, led him to step away. However, he joyfully announced being cancer-free and in good health.

The Hall of Excellence, located on the 100 Level concourse behind right field, will showcase exhibits honoring key figures who have shaped the Blue Jays franchise. Notably, the current 11 members on the team’s Level of Excellence, including Jose Bautista, Joe Carter, and Roy Halladay, will also be featured.

Martinez, who initially felt apprehensive upon joining the Blue Jays in 1981, later embraced Toronto’s passion for baseball, describing it as a welcoming destination. Recalling the excitement of last year’s World Series, he highlighted the memorable Game 7 and the exceptional team camaraderie. Despite witnessing challenges faced by players like Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Martinez emphasized the game’s enduring difficulty, even for top performers.
