NHL prospect Matthew Mayich, a native of Hamilton who formerly played junior hockey with the Ottawa 67’s, is currently hospitalized in Arizona due to an incident during off-ice training, as confirmed by the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). Mayich, 21, was drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL draft.
According to his player profile, Mayich participated in minor hockey with the Hamilton Huskies from 2016 to 2020 before joining the 67’s. The OHL reported that he was hospitalized on August 20 in Arizona while preparing for the upcoming 2026-27 season.
St. Louis Blues officials expressed their concerns for Mayich’s recovery, with Doug Armstrong, the team’s president of hockey operations, stating that the entire organization is keeping Mayich in their thoughts and prayers as he receives medical care in Arizona. The Blues extended their heartfelt support to Mayich’s family, friends, and teammates during this challenging time.
OHL Commissioner Bryan Crawford echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing that their thoughts are with Mayich, his parents John and Christina, and the entire Mayich family. Additionally, Arizona State University, where Mayich is listed as a player, confirmed that a student collapsed during an outdoor morning exercise session and is currently hospitalized, without disclosing the student’s identity.
The Hamilton Steel Hockey Club, formerly known as the Huskies, previously celebrated Mayich’s career milestones in 2021 when he joined the ’67s and in 2023 when he was selected by the Blues. The Huskies highlighted his long-standing association with the organization since the age of nine.
As Mayich continues his recovery, the hockey community remains united in supporting him and wishing for his swift return to health.
