Dylan Cease, known more for his theater background than his art skills in high school, has recently made his mark in the art world with a painting featured at the Art Gallery of Ontario. The AGO shop has unveiled a special retail collection of Cease’s artwork, which includes prints, postcards, apparel, and bags, all inspired by a painting paying homage to Toronto displayed in Walker Court. Proceeds from the collection will support the AGO’s charitable initiatives.
Reflecting on his artistic journey, Cease admitted to not having taken art classes in high school but rather focused on theater. He humorously speculated on what his teachers might think of his artwork, acknowledging potential critiques. During his appearance at the AGO, kids from summer camps sat in as Cease shared insights about his art.
Amidst the event, a long line of enthusiastic Blue Jays fans eagerly awaited to meet Cease, expressing their support and admiration. Reflecting on the overwhelming turnout and media attention, Cease was genuinely surprised by the reception, stating that he never envisioned being involved in such endeavors.
Cease delved into painting in 2022, contributing artwork to a charity project for former teammate Michael King. Notably, the Toronto piece is now proudly displayed in the office of Blue Jays manager John Schneider. Despite suggestions from teammates to paint scenes related to baseball, Cease humorously mentioned his limitations in drawing realistic subjects, opting for abstract art instead.
Inspired by the prospect of spending a significant portion of his career in Toronto, Cease, who recently signed a lucrative contract with the Blue Jays, expressed his interest in Canadian culture and his excitement for the future. He shared his plans to explore oil painting after mastering acrylics, emphasizing the joy and therapeutic benefits he derives from art, contrasting it with the intensity of his baseball career.
Cease highlighted the personal fulfillment he finds in painting, highlighting its role in bringing balance to his life. Regardless of the destination of his artwork, he emphasized the enjoyment and satisfaction he gains from the creative process.
