“New Species of Sea Spiders Unveiled in Salish Sea”

In the depths of the ocean, a peculiar creature with hairy legs and red eyes might seem like a creature from a nightmare, but these sea spiders are a reality on Earth. Recent research unveiled two new species of sea spiders thriving in the Salish Sea in southern British Columbia.

The University of British Columbia’s Cormac Toller-Scott, leading the investigation as part of his zoology master’s program, highlighted the lack of exploration in the region for marine invertebrates, particularly sea spiders. Despite their relation to land spiders, sea spiders originated in the oceans and never ventured onto land.

During dives between September 2023 and August 2024, Toller-Scott and his team explored marine habitats up to 18 meters deep around Quadra Island, Vancouver, Bamfield, and Victoria, uncovering previously undocumented sea spider species. They meticulously analyzed the creatures’ physical characteristics and genetic data to confirm their uniqueness.

The newly discovered sea spiders were found residing on hydroids, resembling attached jellyfish that they feed on as parasites using their proboscis. One species, named Callipallene pilosuspedes, earned its title from the fine spines covering its legs, while the other, Tanystylum kiixin, was named after a nearby Indigenous village.

In a separate study, UBC researchers, led by biologist Shana Goffredi, made a serendipitous discovery of three sea spider species near methane seeps and hydrothermal vents. These spiders exhibited the ability to cultivate bacteria that converted methane into essential nutrients, showcasing a unique ecological role.

Toller-Scott emphasized the importance of taxonomic research in unveiling new species and understanding ecosystems. Despite the challenges in securing funding for such projects, he stressed the significance of taxonomy in laying the groundwork for broader scientific inquiries. The West Coast of Canada, known for its biodiversity, holds untold mysteries awaiting discovery, offering a wealth of opportunities for future scientific exploration.
