Two individuals sustained injuries at the Nanaksar Gurdwara temple in Edmonton when an individual armed with a screwdriver disrupted morning prayers. A 27-year-old suspect is currently in custody following a stabbing incident at the large temple located on the city’s outskirts. The altercation occurred at approximately 5 a.m. in the northeast part of Edmonton.
Law enforcement officials have not disclosed a potential motive for the stabbing incident that took place on Friday. Acting Inspector Eric Stewart of the Edmonton Police Service confirmed during a news briefing that the EPS Hate Crimes unit is leading the investigation. Prior to the stabbing, authorities received reports of a man walking in traffic, with subsequent reports leading to the scene of the crime.
According to Stewart, the suspect, a 27-year-old male, entered the temple and made an attempt to access the prayer room before assaulting two individuals. Swift intervention by witnesses resulted in the suspect being apprehended before police arrival. The victims, aged 75 and 51, were promptly taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, alongside the suspect who also sustained injuries.
The suspect, who has a known history of violence and was recently released from a federal institution, faces pending charges. The individual was serving a sentence for aggravated assault and assaulting a peace officer and had failed to report to the designated halfway house in Edmonton. Investigations are ongoing to determine how the suspect ended up at the temple instead of the assigned residence.
Zora Grewal, the vice president of the Nanaksar Gurdwara Gursikh Temple, relayed that witnesses reported the presence of several individuals inside the temple during the attack. Refuting initial claims of a sacred text being targeted, temple officials confirmed no scriptures were harmed in the incident. Grewal expressed shock upon learning of the suspect’s recent release and emphasized the need for stricter measures concerning the release of potentially dangerous offenders.
Both injured individuals are expected to recover, with officials planning to convene for discussions regarding potential security enhancements. Grewal underscored the temple’s role as a sanctuary for peace and prayer, stressing inclusivity and harmony within the community.
In response to the incident, the World Sikh Organization of Canada president Danish Singh urged heightened security measures within gurdwaras nationwide. The gurdwara where the attack occurred was temporarily closed for public access as investigations proceed. The stabbing incident follows threatening phone calls received by two Sikh temples in Alberta, prompting calls for reform in bail and parole legislation by government officials.
Prime Minister Mark Carney extended his condolences to the victims and community, emphasizing the importance of safety in places of worship. Political leaders and law enforcement authorities have condemned the violence and assured the affected communities of ongoing support and thorough investigations into the incidents.
