The Pan Pacific Championships witnessed contrasting performances from Canadian swimmers Taylor Ruck and Summer McIntosh in Irvine, California on Friday night.
Ruck secured a silver medal in the women’s 100m butterfly and later clinched bronze as part of the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay team, marking her fourth and fifth medals of the competition. She achieved a personal best time of 56.71 seconds in the 100m butterfly, finishing behind American Gretchen Walsh, who clocked 55.15 seconds. Australian Alexandria Perkins claimed the bronze with a time of 56.75 seconds.
Reflecting on her victory in the 100m butterfly, Ruck expressed, “I feel like I got good rest between prelims and finals, and did all the things to feel relaxed and trust my body.” Earlier in the competition, Ruck won a bronze in the 100m backstroke and contributed to the women’s 4x100m medley relay team’s bronze.
On the other hand, McIntosh faced disappointment after failing to qualify for the A final in the women’s 400m freestyle event despite winning the B final. She took full responsibility for her performance and expressed frustration at missing the final. McIntosh, who previously won the women’s 200m freestyle and 400m individual medley, vowed to learn from the experience.
In the men’s events, Canadians Blake Tierney and Ethan Ekk secured silver and bronze, respectively, in the men’s 200m backstroke. Tierney emphasized the significance of both athletes standing on the podium alongside Japan’s Yumeki Kojima, who clinched the gold medal.
Ruck continued her success by guiding Canada to a bronze medal in the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay event. The U.S. team clinched gold, while Australia secured silver in the event. However, the Canadian men’s 4x100m freestyle team narrowly missed a podium finish, finishing fourth behind the U.S., Australia, and Japan.
The competition showcased a mix of triumphs and setbacks for the Canadian swimmers, highlighting their resilience and determination in the face of challenges.
